America Saves Week

Set a Goal. Make a Plan. Save Automatically.

Knowing what you want to save for, how to achieve it, and then making the savings process automatic will help you to reach your savings goal.

Set a Goal

You can save more by having a goal in mind. Visualizing what you want to save for gives your savings a purpose. You may be tempted to withdraw from your savings if it has no purpose. But once you have a goal in place, you know that taking money out of your savings is taking away from that ultimate goal. What are you saving for—an emergency fund, retirement, education, or a car?

Make a Plan

Once you have your goal in place, make a plan for how you are going to save. To start, cut down on your spending and reduce high-cost debt—read America Saves’ helpful articles http://www.americasaves.org/for-savers/make-a-plan-how-to-save-money on setting a savings plan that is right for you. A great one to start with is Saving on a Tight Budget http://www.americasaves.org/for-savers/make-a-plan-how-to-save-money/saving-on-a-tight-budget.

Next, keep track of what you spend and make a budget—good advice here from America Saves on setting up a budget http://www.americasaves.org/for-savers/make-a-plan-how-to-save-money/creating-a-budget. Once you know where your money is going each month, you can cut down on unneeded spending and save the difference.

Don’t forget to keep your savings safe, secure, and growing. At PayDayHawaii, we offer the NetSpend prepaid debit card https://www.paydayhawaii.com/prepaid-debit-cards. With NetSpend, you are eligible for a NetSpend Savings Account: No minimum deposit, and NetSpend offers a 5.00% interest (Annual Percentage Yield)—one of the highest interest rates in the country. Load your card with funds from your savings account, or use it to deposit funds. And it's FDIC insured.

Banks, credit unions, and even the government offer a variety of financial products that can help you save—but be sure to read through all the conditions and fees before you put your money in.

Save Automatically

It can be hard to put aside money for savings. But there is an easy way to save money without ever missing it. Once you know how much you can save, make saving automatic. Many employers allow you to divide your paycheck into different accounts through direct deposit. Take advantage by putting part of your pay into a savings account. If you get paid in cash, take a small amount to deposit into a savings account each week, or to load up onto a savings prepaid debit card.

Take the America Saves Pledge http://www.americasaves.org/for-savers/pledge, (or re-pledge) today to set your savings goal and make a plan to save.

Tax Time

Many people view tax refunds as unplanned bonuses to use for splurges; but a tax refund also provides the opportunity to improve your financial situation by setting aside savings or paying off high-interest debts. There’s great information about how to get the most from your tax refund at America Saves here http://www.americasaves.org/for-savers/make-a-plan-how-to-save-money/saving-at-tax-time.

Everyone has the ability to save—whether you just put aside your loose change, or dedicate $25 from each paycheck. Start a plan that is comfortable for you, and stick with it. Start small, think big!
